OBJECTS OF MY AFFECTION ist ein Titel, den wir Man Ray (1890-1976) entlehnt haben. Ray hat in den 1940er Jahren in einer Liste mit dem Titel Objects of my affection/objets de mon affection Lieblingsobjekte aus seiner eigenen künstlerischen Produktion dokumentiert. Bei der Auswahl, die Man Ray getroffen hat fällt auf, dass er nicht nur seine künstlerische Produktion sondern auch die Schönheit alltäglicher Dinge, die ihn umgaben in Betracht zog und die dann vielfach in seinen Objekten Verwendung gefunden haben.

In einer von Reizüberflutung dominierten Gegenwart bietet diese Ausstellung, angelehnt an der Haltung eines Künstlers, der auch heute noch ein Vorbild für viele Kunstschaffende ist an, neue Seherfahrungen zu machen. Die Auswahl wurde größtenteils von den Künstlern getroffen. Einige wenige Werke wurden von Marion und Roswitha Fricke ausgewählt ohne kuratorisch in das Konzept einzugreifen. Bei der Auswahl und Präsentation gibt es keine Hierarchie. Insofern folgt diese Ausstellung dem Prinzip der Wunderkammern. Allerdings wird in dieser Ausstellung kein Illusionismus (als Resultat der Erfindung des perspektivischen Sehens) vorgegaukelt wie häufig in den Wunderkammern des Barock angewendet. Der Wunsch, die göttliche Ordnung der Welt möglichst anschaulich und komplett im Kleinformat zu zeigen, ist einem Konzept für Kunst der Gegenwart gewichen. Das kleine Format ist aber nach wie vor ein wichtiges Detail, das auch in dieser Ausstellung deutlich großen Anteil hat. Es illustriert gewissermassen das Prinzip, was sich hinter dem Begriff Inspiration verbirgt.

Eingeladen wurden KünstlerInnen, die mit der Galerie zusammenarbeiten, und solche, die in der Vergangenheit an Themenausstellungen beteiligt waren. Und es sind auch Arbeiten verteten, die von befreundeten Künstlern vorgeschlagen wurden.

OBJECTS OF MY AFFECTION is a title borrowed from Man Ray (1890-1976). In the 1940s, Ray documented his favorite objects from his own artistic production in a list with the title Objects of my affection/objets de mon affection. What stands out in the selection that Man Ray hit upon, is that he that he didn’t only consider his own artistic production, but also the beauty of everyday things around him, which often then found a role in his objects.

In today’s over-stimulated times, this exhibition offers, based on the stance of an artist who is still today a paragon for many of those making art, new types of visual experience. The selection was mostly made by the artists. Marion and Roswitha Fricke chose a few works without their encroaching curatorially on the concept of the show. In the selection and presentation there is no hierarchy. In this sense the exhibition follows the principle of the Wunderkammer.

However, in this show, no illusion (as a result of the invention of perspective) is played with, as so often in the Wunderkammers of the baroque era. The idea of showing the divine order of things as completely and vividly as possible in miniature has given way to a concept for contemporary art. The miniature is however still an important detail, which clearly has a large part in this exhibition. It illustrates, after a fashion, what in principle lies behind the term inspiration.

We invited artists working with the gallery, and some who took part in themed exhibitions in the past. Also included are works from artists that were suggested by the artists invited for the show.
