LA GRANDE MOTTE UND ANDERE ORTE

Wir freuen uns, Sie zur ersten Einzelausstellung von Katharina Schmidt seit unserem Umzug in die Invalidenstraße in Berlin-Mitte einzuladen.
Die Künstlerin lebt seit 5 Jahren auch in Marseille und unterrichtet seitdem Malerei an der Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse.
Katharina Schmidt bedient sich in Malerei und Zeichnung eines Vokabulars, das bewusst uneinheitlich ist. Stilisierte Darstellungen, oft aus dem Zusammenhang von Reklame oder Grafikdesign entnommen,
tauchen gleichberechtigt mit Architekturmotiven auf. Ihre Aquarell- Bleistift- und Computerzeichnungen werden zu einem Pool von Motiven. Bei der Aneignung und formalen Umsetzung spielt Reduktion eine
entscheidende Rolle. Durch Vergrösserung, Rasterung und anschließender Verfielfältigung mittels Schablonen entsteht eine ornamentale Anordnung, die sie auf verschiedensten Trägern
weiterverwendet: Ausstellungswände, Kleidungsstücke, Glasflächen,
Stoffe und Leinwände.
In den letzten Jahren bezieht sich Katharina Schmidt verstärkt auf
Architekturen, deren gesellschaftspolitische Visionen noch heute
faszinieren (das Denkmal der III.Internationale von Valdimir Tatlin,
Le Corbusiers L’Unité Habitation, die Plattenbauten in der
Planstadt Hoyerswerda, die Zentrale der kommunistischen Partei von
Oskar Niemeyer in Paris).
Für ihre Installation "La Grande Motte und andere Orte" fertigte die
Künstlerin eine Serie von Zeichnungen an, deren Vorbild die
Architektur des Ferienortes La Grande Motte aus den 1960er und 1970er
Jahren ist. Im Zuge eines von Paris aus zentral gesteuerten
Großprojektes zur touristischen Erschließung des Languedoc-Rousillon
wurde diese Stadt von dem Architekten Jean Balladur geplant und gebaut.
Katharina Schmidt greift die architektonischen Eigenheiten der
pyramidenförmigen Gebäude auf: im Ausstellungsraum werden
großformatige, gerasterte Siebdrucke zum tapetenartigen "Dekor".
Ergänzt wird die Installation durch Bilder, die nach einem Protokoll
entstehen. Ein sich wiederholendes Motiv, das mit einer Schablone auf
die Leinwand aufgetragen wird, ist Ausgangspunkt. Das graphisch
anmutende Ornament wird durch gestische Malerei durchbrochen, die
sich zu einem Netzwerk aus einer Mischung von dick aufgetragenen bis
zu ganz feinen krakeligen Linien über das gesamte Bild verdichtet.
Im Ausstellugsraum kommt es zu einer inszenierten Konfrontation
verschiedener Wirklichkeitsebenen. Die im Rapport tapezierten
Siebdrucke treten in Beziehung zu den Bildern und der vorgegebenen
Architektur.
Als Ergebnis einer langanhaltenden Auseinandersetzung der Künstlerin
mit dem Gebäudekomplex Centre Bourse aus den 1960er bis 1980er
Jahren im Zentrum von Marseille, entstand eine Aquarellfolge, die in
dem soeben erschienenen gleichnamigen Buch veröffentlicht ist und
erstmals in der Galerie vorgestellt wird.

We are pleased to invite you to the first solo exhibition of Katharina Schmidt since our move to Invalidenstrasse in Berlin Mitte.
For the last five years, the artist has also been living in Marseille and since then has been teaching painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse.
Katharina Schmidt’s paintings and drawings make use of a vocabulary
that is deliberately heterogeneous. Stylised representations that are
frequently taken from the areas of advertising or graphic design are
combined with architectural motifs. Her watercolour, pencil and
computer drawings become a pool of motifs. In the process of
appropriation and formal translation, reduction plays crucial role.
The enlargement, conversion to a halftone format, and duplication
using stencils creates an ornamental arrangement that is subsequently
transferred to diverse supports such as exhibition walls, clothing,
glass, fabrics and canvases.
Over the last few years Katharina Schmidt has referred increasingly
to architecture whose socio-political vision continues to fascinate
us today (Vladimir Tatlin’s Monument to the Third International, Le
Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation, the housing complexes of the
model town Hoyerswerda, Oskar Niemeyer’s Communist Party
headquarters in Paris). For her installation “La Grande Motte and
Other Places” the artist has produced a series of drawings based on
the 1960s and 1970s architecture of the French holiday resort La
Grande Motte. This town was planned and built by the architect Jean
Balladur in the course of a large-scale project for the touristic
development of the Languedoc-Rousillon region organised centrally
from Paris.
Katharina Schmidt focuses on the distinctive architecture of the
pyramid-shaped buildings. In the gallery space, large-scale screen
prints become a wallpaper-like “décor”. This installation is
complimented by pictures that are made according to a set procedure.
The starting point is a repeating motif that is applied to the canvas
using a stencil. This graphic-like ornament is then interrupted by
gestural painting that forms a network of both thickly applied and
fine spidery lines over the whole picture.
The result is a staged confrontation in the exhibition space between
different levels of reality. A relationship is established between
the repeating pattern of the silkscreened wallpaper, the pictures and
the existing architecture. The artist’s long engagement with the building complex Centre Bourse
(built between the 1960s and the 1980s) in the centre of Marseille
has resulted in a series of watercolours that has now been published
in a book with the same name. This will be presented for the first
time in the gallery.
