Sid Gastl - Halbwelt 22.1.-12.3.2011
In seiner vierten Einzelausstellung Halbwelt bei M + R Fricke zeigt Sid Gastl neue Bilder, die im Gegensatz zu seinen Landschaftsbildern, in denen ein unnahbares, an die „pittura metafisica“ erinnerndes Verführungsspiel stattfindet, Interieurs und nicht eindeutig definierbare Tierdarstellungen.
Die Interieurs oder Innenräume ziehen den Betrachter - wie auch in seinen großformatigen Landschaftsdarstellungen - ins Bild. Man ist Fremdkörper und Teilnehmer zugleich, als würde der Künstler den Außenstehenden einladen, diese scheinbar unbewohnten postmodern unterkühlten Räume zu beleben. Bei diesen neuen Bildern hat sich Gastl nicht nur auf die Darstellung des Interieurs beschränkt. „Man tritt ein“ und blickt gleichzeitig durch Panoramafenster in eine kulissenartige Waldlandschaft. Man kann nicht sagen, wer hier der Beobachter ist: der Künstler oder der Betrachter. Als hätte man einen Tatort betreten, schweift der Blick von innen nach außen. Doch es gibt keine Realität in Gastls Bildern. Alles bleibt in der Schwebe und zweideutig in diesen durch Licht und Halbschatten dramaturgisch gestalteten Bildern.
Dieser Zustand des Innehaltens wird durch eine Reihe von kleinformatigen Bildern, in denen Gastl fast amorphe oder wie im Todeskrampf verschlungene Tierkörper gemalt hat, konterkariert. Die Dichte und die damit verbundene Unwirklichkeit dieser Bilder zieht den Betrachter in ihren Bann. Man möchte mehr erfahren oder erkennen, worauf es der Künstler in diesen Bildern abgesehen hat. Sind es apokalyptische Vorahnungen oder hat der Künstler einfach nur den Weg der gängigen Seherfahrung verlassen, um eine neue malerische Konzentration zu schaffen?
Aber wie der Künstler selbst sagt, „was bleibt, sei das Geheimnis, auf das man zwar stößt, das man aber nicht lösen kann, das aber in der Bildwirklichkeit eine Form finden kann“.
Im Verlauf der Ausstellung wird ein umfangreicher Katalog über Sid Gastl mit Textbeiträgen von Peter Funken und Nicola Graef erscheinen. Die Katalogvorstellung mit einem Gespräch des Künstlers werden wir gesondert ankündigen.

In Halbwelt, his fourth solo exhibition at M + R Fricke, Sid Gastl is showing new pictures that depart from his seductive but inaccessible landscapes evoking the 'Pittura metafisica': namely interiors, and ambiguously defined animal figures.
The interiors draw the viewer -much like the large format landscapes- into the picture plane. There one is both foreign body and participant, as though the artist had issued an invitation to the outsider to animate these apparently unoccupied, chilly postmodern spaces. In these new pictures however, Gastl has not restricted himself to the realisation of interior rooms. Entering the picture, the eye also meets a backdrop-like forest landscape, seen through a panoramic window. It becomes impossible to say who the 'observer' is: the viewer, or the artist himself. As if one had stumbled upon a crime scene, one's gaze rambles from inside to outside. But in Gastl's pictures there is no reality. In these dramaturgically structured pictures, the play of light and half-shadow ensures that all remains suspended and ambiguous.
This contemplative condition is countered by a series of small format pictures in which Gastl has painted almost amorphous bodies of animals that appear to be in mortal agony. The density of these pictures and their corresponding unreality cast a spell on the spectator. One would like to learn more or work out what the artist intended in these pictures. Are they apocalyptic presentiments or has the artist simply left behind established ways of seeing, in order to develop a new type of painterly rigour? The artist himself says: "what remains is the mystery, which one stumbles across, but which one cannot solve, but which one can however find a pictoral form for".
